Candidates for Certification in Stress Management complete a three-step process. In the first step of The LifeStyle Counselor Certification ProgramT, program participants complete the Exam Preparation Course (EPC)-a self-study program to develop knowledge and skills for lifestyle counseling in stress management. In the second step, Candidates for Certification take and pass a self-administered Certification Examination to earn Provisional Certification. In the final step, program participants complete the two-day, hands-on Applied Practicum Training Course (APTC) to become Fellow Members of the American Association of Lifestyle Counselors.

The program objectives include learning:

  • To assess clients and know when to refer to a mental health professional
  • To identify the relationship between clients’ cognitive and behavioral patterns and their stress responses to daily events
  • Techniques for assessment of clients’ stress management needs
  • Strategies for modifying stress-inducing, cognitive-behavioral patterns
  • Problem solving and time management skills
  • Techniques for teaching and demonstrating relaxation exercises
  • Self-monitoring systems that assist in stress management
  • Legal, business, and marketing skills for today's competitive environment
  • Strategies for developing a community healthcare referral network

The Applied Practicum Training Course focuses on the hands-on application of stress management knowledge and skills in the lifestyle counseling setting. During this two-day (12 hour) classroom training session, Provisional Members interact with faculty members using multiple teaching methodologies, including animated computerized presentations, case studies, role playing, and group counseling activities. The different training modalities help to make learning in the APTC fun, entertaining, and memorable.
