Candidates for Certification in Weight Management complete a three-step process. In the first step of The LifeStyle Counselor Certification ProgramT, program participants complete the Exam Preparation Course (EPC)-a self-study program designed to develop knowledge and skills for lifestyle counseling in weight management. In the second step, Candidates for Certification take and pass a self-administered Certification Examination to earn Provisional Certification. In the final step, Provisional Members of the AALC complete the two-day, hands-on Applied Practicum Training Course (APTC) of The LifeStyle Counselor Certification Program to become Fellow Members in the American Association of Lifestyle Counselors.

The program objectives include learning:

  • Techniques for screening at-risk clients and matching programs to individual needs
  • Presentation and group facilitation skills
  • Strategies for enhancing motivation, program compliance, and client retention
  • Relapse prevention theory and practice
  • Motivational interviewing techniques
  • Principles of behavior change and how to adapt them for different populations (i.e., children and adolescents, older adults, and culturally diverse groups)
  • Techniques for teaching clients to design personalized, balanced food plans for weight loss and maintenance
  • The latest in pharmacotherapy treatments in weight management
  • The safest methods for designing exercise routines to enhance health and weight loss

The Applied Practicum Training Course focuses on the hands-on application of weight management knowledge and skills in the lifestyle counseling setting. During this two-day (12 hour) classroom training session, Provisional Members interact with faculty members using multiple teaching methodologies, including animated computerized presentations, case studies, role playing, and group counseling activities. The different training modalities help to make learning in the APTC fun, entertaining, and memorable.

NOTE: Participants may choose to complete both the weight management and stress management applied practicum training courses in a two-day, 18-hour combined course.
