Candidates
for Certification in Weight Management
complete a three-step process. In the
first step of The LifeStyle Counselor
Certification ProgramT,
program participants complete the Exam Preparation Course (EPC)-a
self-study program designed to develop
knowledge and skills for lifestyle counseling
in weight management. In the second step,
Candidates for Certification take and
pass a self-administered Certification
Examination to earn Provisional Certification.
In the final step, Provisional Members
of the AALC complete the two-day, hands-on
Applied Practicum Training Course (APTC)
of The LifeStyle Counselor Certification
Program to become Fellow Members in the
American Association of Lifestyle Counselors.
The program objectives
include learning:
- Techniques for screening at-risk clients and matching programs to individual needs
- Presentation and group facilitation skills
- Strategies for enhancing motivation, program compliance, and client retention
- Relapse prevention theory and practice
- Motivational interviewing techniques
- Principles of behavior change and how to adapt them for different populations (i.e., children and adolescents, older adults, and culturally diverse groups)
- Techniques for teaching clients to design personalized, balanced food plans for weight loss and maintenance
- The latest in pharmacotherapy treatments in weight management
- The safest methods for designing exercise routines to enhance health and weight loss
- Legal, business, and marketing skills for today's competitive environment
- Strategies for developing a community healthcare referral network
In essence, participants learn how to integrate the latest information from psychology,
nutrition, exercise physiology, and medicine into a practical, positive, safe, and effective program for weight management.
The Applied Practicum Training Course focuses on the hands-on application of
weight management knowledge and skills in the lifestyle counseling setting. During this two-day (12 hour) classroom training session,
Provisional Members interact with faculty members using multiple teaching methodologies, including animated computerized presentations,
case studies, role playing, and group counseling activities. The different training modalities help to make learning in the APTC fun, entertaining,
and memorable.

18-hour combined course.
